The slow cooker or what many of us know it as the crock pot, is an appliance that can serve up great meals with little to moderate prep time. The slow cooker allows you to add all the ingredients in the morning or the night before, turn it on and walk away for a few hours or all day without having to wait and stand over the stove.

Some features to look for that we really like are programmable timers, warming modes and a thermometer probe. A thermometer probe is inserted into the center of a roast through a small opening in the lid, you then have the ability to select a temperature to set the roast at, once the internal temperature is reached, the slow cooker will switch to warm mode, preventing the roast from overcooking.
For large roast or cooking for a gang we recommend at least a large oval 6 quarts slow cooker.

Slow cookers come with two settings, low and high. There really is nothing better than throwing everything into the slow cooker in the morning, setting it and forgetting it, coming home after a hard day at work and supper is ready and waiting for you when you get home.
However there are days when you just don't have the time to wait for your meal to cook all day. Some days we can't decide what we want for supper until midday, these are the times when cooking on high is a good option for the slow cooker.
If you do have the choice go with the low setting on your slow cooker. We have found with most slow cooker recipes, cooking on the low setting will give you a meal that is a little more tender and moist compared to cooking on the high setting.
